Marguerite and Armand (1963)

Ballet in one act: Prologue and four scenes, after The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas, fils
Marguerite and Armand was created by Ashton for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev at the height of their legendary partnership, when she was in her late forties and he in his twenties. Inspired by Dumas’s love story La Dame aux Camelias, Ashton distilled the story into concentrated episodes told in feverish flashbacks—his choreography so intense that Fonteyn recalled the tragic love story as being ‘a passion more real than life itself’. The ballet was never danced by another couple as long as she and Nureyev were alive, but was revived by Anthony Dowell (then Director of The Royal Ballet) for Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche in 2000, and has since been performed by star pairings including Tamara Rojo/Sergei Polunin, Zenaida Yanowsky/ Roberto Bolle, Alessandra Ferri/ Federico Bonelli and Natalia Osipova/ Vladimir Shklyarov.
